Your argument that local media need to provi...Jim,

Your argument that local media need to provide more world news is groundless.

If we want world news, we'll tune into CNN, Fox and MSNBC and read the New York Times and the Washington Post, which are both available online for free.

The networks and major newspapers provide better world coverage than any local station could provide, and besides, local TV stations and the Austin American-Statesman don't have their own reporters on the world front, so any world story they would provide would be generated by reporters from other news organizations.

Local media need to put more of their energy into covering local news, especially since they have smaller staffers, as a result of cuts due to the dropoff in ad revenue.

As to columnist George Will, why in heaven would you want to know more about what he thinks? I'm familiar with his column. But I give his thinking no credibility, since he is not a military and foreign policy expert. He's simply a journalist who loves controversy.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1143088625756367367.post-82715137133638251752009-09-02T15:28:48.020-05:002009-09-02T15:28:48.020-05:00Without igniting a range war...I'd like to try...Without igniting a range war...I'd like to try and say it's generational. The over 50's need to remember that a good percentage of us (In Austin) were "flipping cars and dodging tear gas". We were meeting in low rent living rooms and coffee shops to "discuss things".
A position, and a mind open to discussion was valued.
The toothpaste got out of the tube with Kennedy, and Reagan, Rush, and the "bidness" crowd has been doing a fine job of trying to put it back in since 1980. This country runs like a 2nd string football game..."You're either with us, or against us."
Rah Rah.
But it's all the same since the Jefferson-Hamilton split way back. Read Robert Caro on "Master of the Senate" for an excellent history of governmental inaction. The system doesn't work because it doesn't allow for even the smallest "orderly change". Cash talks, and reality walks.
